At a solar farm in Herefordshire, EMS Geotech demonstrated our ability to be highly responsive and efficient, conducting critical plate load testing.
The client’s enquiry came in around 9:30-10:00 am on December 21st via phone, and by 12:30-1:00 pm the same day, our team was mobilized and on-site. Utilising a13-tonne excavator for kentledge, we performed ten California Bearing Ratio(CBR) plate load tests across the entire site, including haulage roads and crane bases.
Plate load testing is a method typically used to test the strength of various layers including formation or subgrade, placed capping layers and sub-base. This test method is widely used when establishing the strength of crane bases, piling pads or crane outriggers, testing compacted stones on roads, as well as foundations for building slabs or commercial building stanchion bases, to ensure the required loading can be achieved.
Plate Load Tests may be used when a CBR value is required but the maximum particle size of soil exceeds 20mm. Plate load test by CBR method may also be more suitable when a deeper loading profile is appropriate.
A CBR test works by applying incremental loads onto a base plate and measuring the deflection(sinking) of the plate with digital gauges attached to a datum bar, which measure to within 0.01mm of movement The harder the surface, the higher the CBR value. On a typical site with prepared surfaces, multiple CBR tests are usually conducted in a day by a single operator, with provisional results often available on site.
This testing was essential for assessing the ground's bearing capacity and ensuring the robust design and construction of the solar farm’s foundations. The results were delivered to the client the following day, all for a competitive fee. This swift response and precise testing underscore our commitment to providing high-quality service under tight deadlines, optimising our service delivery for this particular client.
Additionally, EMS has provided the solar farm provider with a range of other geotechnical services including additional CBR testing on several local sites within the West Midlands, further cementing our reputation for reliability and comprehensive support in the region.
EMS Geotech offers specialized Plate Load testing services in compliance with the BS1377-9:1990 standard. Our experienced engineers are equipped to advise on the appropriate plate diameter based on your anticipated design load and the necessary reaction load, including the required size of equipment, such as an excavator, available on-site.
Service Highlights:
· Testing Standard: BS 1377-9:1990.
· Test Capacity: Typically, our team can complete 10-15 tests per day, depending on site conditions.
· Result Turnaround: Results are generally provided the same day/ next day after testing.
